Mr. Gus Kelos passed away peacefully Friday, March 14th, with his family by his side. Gus was born December 15th, 1926, in Kastraki, Greece. He moved to Canada in 1951 and worked at Parnell’s Bakery and The One Minute Lunch. Gus worked side by side with his uncle George until 1968 when he became owner/operator of the McKellar Confectionary and started on his way to becoming a legend – the creator of the best Coney Island hotdogs and hamburgers. He worked passionately, and loved his work and it was only when he became ill in 2010 that he retired. Gus married Athanasia Gekas on August 23rd 1959, and together they raised two sons, Chris and George. Gus was happiest when his family and friends visited him in the restaurant and enjoyed seeing generations of customers walk through the doors over the years. He especially loved when his three granddaughters came to visit. Gus is survived by his wife Athanasia, his sons Chris (Eileen), George (Sue) and granddaughters Bianca, Alexandra and Jenna as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives in Canada and Greece. He was predeceased by his parents and sisters Helen, Katerina, Giannoula, brother Bill in Greece and his brother Tom in Thunder Bay. Visitation for friends and family will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, commencing at 6:00 pm in the Greek Orthodox Community Holy Trinity Church, on Beverly Street. A prayer service will take place at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Nikolaos Tambakis officiating. Funeral services and interment will take place privately. If friends so desire, donations can be made to The Greek Orthodox Community Holy Trinity Church, The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay or charity of choice.
