Concerned about costs...Letter to the Editor at the Chronicle Journal...

I think Mayor Keith Hobbs is wrong in dubbing citizens who are being extra cautious about unnecessary city spending fear mongers (Hobbs Cites Fear-mongering at Event Centre Session — CJ, March 13).

Our hospital is facing a deficit, our homes for the aged are in need of more cash, policing costs are on the rise and the families of those who have no jobs are counting more and more on Shelter House, Dew Drop Inn, and St. Vincent de Paul.
Even the flood victims haven’t been fully assisted. I am fearful that if this council is re-elected this city is in danger of bankruptcy.

How much has been spent on the Marina Park fiasco? The Community Auditorium is still in a deficit position as is our Canada Games Complex.

Why are the “fear mongers” worried? How much is being spent on architects for conceptual drawings of the event centre and on consultants for the business plan and economic impact study? Would Lakehead University be able to cut the costs of these studies?

Are restaurant owners glad to hear another eatery is to be included in the event centre proposal? What will the convention area of the project do to that portion of our business community?

Let’s hope all the fear mongers and those who will be paying off debts for the next 10 years or more turn out to cast their ballot in this year’s municipal election.

I would like to see two plebiscites:
1. Should council revert to a two-year term?
2. Are you in favor of spending millions of dollars on a multiplex?
